Kemp Town, consisting of Sussex Square, Lewes Crescent, ArundelTerrace, Chichester Terrace and Kemp Town Mews, was laid out by Thomas Read Kemp, Joint Lord of the Manor of Brighton, between 1823 to 1828, and was intended to be a self-contained entity. The architects were a local partnership of Amon Wilds and Charles Augustus Busby, but only the facades of the houses were designed by them. These facades were completed by 1828, but many of the houses remained in scaffolding as empty carcases for twenty or thirty years, and were not occupied until the end of the forties or beginning of the fifties.
