Rottingdean was brought within the County Borough of Brighton in 1927. This house, dated 1724, is on of the seven or eight good eighteenth century houses facing the Green which form the special feature of Rottingdean and make it still a village within a town. 'Hillside' adjoins North End House, occupied by Burne-Jones and looks on to the garden of the Elms, occupied by Kipling.
