Patcham Place, Brighton.

This is a house of considerable distinction on account of the material of which it is built. It is faced with black mathematical tiles - a very unusual feature for a large, individual house standing within its grounds, or for any building other than a terrace of small houses facing the sea.The house was built in the mid-eighteenth century for John Paine, the uncle of Thomas Read Kemp, the founder of Kemp Town. It is now rented by the Youth Hostels Association.
